Everyday Tips for Comfortable Joints
Stiff in the morning or slow on the stairs? Simple daily habits, from gentle movement to warm oil massage, can help you stay active and comfortable.
Stiffness when you get out of bed, or knees that complain on the stairs, are common, especially after 40 or if your work keeps you standing or sitting for long hours. A few everyday habits can make a real difference to how comfortable and active you feel.
Keep moving, gently
It is tempting to rest when joints feel stiff, but gentle, regular movement usually helps. Walking, simple stretches and easy yoga postures keep you flexible. Start slowly and increase a little at a time.
Warm oil massage (abhyanga)
Ayurveda has long recommended massage with warm oil. Gently massaging the knees, shoulders or lower back for a few minutes can feel relaxing and soothing. Warm the oil slightly, use light circular strokes and wipe off the excess afterwards.
Watch your posture
If you sit at a desk, keep your feet flat on the floor and your back supported, and stand up every hour. When you lift something heavy, bend your knees instead of your back.
Eat well and drink enough water
A balanced diet with dal, green vegetables, seasonal fruit, nuts and enough water supports your overall health. Keeping a healthy body weight also reduces the load on your knees.
Choose the right footwear
Comfortable shoes with good support make a big difference if you walk or stand a lot. Avoid hard, flat soles for long walks.
Herbs traditionally used in Ayurveda
Herbs such as Shallaki (Boswellia), Hadjod and Ashwagandha have long been used in Ayurveda for joint and bone support. Herbal products can be part of a daily routine, together with movement and good food.
When to see a doctor
If a joint is swollen, red, very painful, or the discomfort does not go away, please see a doctor. Do not ignore an injury.
